Encaustic Painting:
Encaustic Painting (painting with hot wax) one of the world's oldest techniques, has been rediscovered by contemporary artists.  The paints are a blend of pure pigment and molten beeswax resulting in a mixture that is virtually nontoxic.  The nature of the medium is also suitable for collage, imbedding objects into the wax, and an unlimited variety of three dimensional effects.  This can result in a layered, velvety sheen like a glazed donut.  Encaustic painting dries rapidly and its characteristic matte finish and rich colour create luxurious art work.  This is an exciting medium for beginners as well as experienced painters alike.
$125.00 includes starting encaustic painting kit. No more than 6 students per class.

This environmental writing workshop allows participants to explore, reflect, and deepen their person connections with the sacredness of nature through a series of experiential exercises, each a focused lens or meditation through which to engage with the environment, the sense, and memory.  While using The New School as our base, we will spend most of the day in the field at local land reserves and other near by natural settings.  The writing workshop will be followed by a reading given by Meagan Grumbling and workshop participants.

"After School" Community Learning

The New School believes that learning should be a community endeavor, not an isolated experience for particular age groups. To that end our Community Courses give people of any age the chance to interact through their desire to learn new things. To encourage youth and senior participation, students that are 8th grade and under and people over 65 receive a 50% discount.

"After School" is a community service.

Costs for these courses are based on a rate of $5 to $7 per hour depending on materials needed and cost of instruction. Some courses require student supplied materials or books. There is no profit to The New School, only expenses are covered. Some expenses are covered through the generosity of Tom's of Maine, the Kennebunk Savings Bank, and the Irving Foundation.
